News From The South
Thus far NWHP–Southern Region has had a rewarding year. The group’s partnership with Mesquite Club and Friends of Old Mormon Fort to erect a statue of Helen J. Steward, known as “First Lady of Las Vegas,” has been successful. The Raise a Glass!-Raise a Statue! Extravaganza on September 20, 2008, at the Fort included Southern Region’s own past president Dr. Linda Miller, who did a Chautauquan presentation of Helen. Benjamin Victor, sculptor who sculpted the Sarah Winnemucca statues and is to sculpt the life-sized Helen J. Stewart statue, was present to unveil his preliminary sketch of this great lady. Prior to this event, the NWHP State Committee meeting was held at the lovely home of Joan LeMere. It included a continental breakfast, a delicious lunch, and a well-attended meeting presided over by State President Dianne Steel. Southern Region’s first luncheon meeting was September 6, at Marie Callender’s Restaurant, 4800 So. Eastern Ave. Around 50 members and guests attended. The infamous character of Julia Bulette of Virginia City was portrayed. Membership is growing! Interest in writing biographies about famous Nevada ladies is overwhelming, according to Biography Committee Chair Joan LeMere. The concluding event for 2008 shall be a catered Christmas High Tea, to be held at the luxurious Summerlin home of member Jeanne Greenawalt, from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, December 20th. We extend our Happy Holiday wishes to everyone! Mary Gafford |
